Mara Triangle Maasai Villages
Tribal Voice Communications Ltd (TVC), a Responsible Tourism Consultancy based in the UK has a new project funded by the Travel Foundation (www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk), based in the UK. Its members include, amongst others, ABTA, AITO, British Airways, Cosmos Holidays, the DTI, Exodus, Explore, First Choice Holidays, Guerba, Kuoni, Lastminute.com, My Travel, Oxfam, the ODI, Sunvil Holidays, Thomas Cook, Tui, UNEP, Virgin Holidays and Wildlife Worldwide. As such, this initiative is fully endorsed and supported by the major tour operators in the UK that send visitors to Kenya.
The initiative has been running in the Mara Triangle since September 2006 and has proven to be extremely successful in returning equitable benefits from tourists visiting cultural manyattas back to the local Maasai community. It has also significantly improved the quality and overall visitor experience of these cultural tours.
There are four villages in the initiative (Enkererei, Hardrock, Enkutoto and Ilkinye) and they have witnessed a 790% increase in revenue collection over the 9 month pilot period. The villages are using their newly captured tourism income to improve their livelihood in areas of education, water and sanitation among others
Tickets for excursions to the 4 manyattas in the Mara Triangle are now available from the KATO Secretariat.
